The template visit is when precise measurements are taken. Fabrication starts right after, so by the time the measurer shows up, the material decision needs to be final. Not “leaning towards quartz.” Final. Specific slab, edge profile, cutouts. All of it.
Changing the material after templating means starting the fabrication timeline over. It’s avoidable.
Have these been confirmed before the template appointment?:
- Sink model and specs (cutout dimensions vary between manufacturers, so bring the product sheet or manual)
- Cooktop or range position, if it affects the countertop layout
- Edge profile selected
- Backsplash height, if it connects to the countertop installation

The Day Before: Make the Kitchen Accessible
Countertop slabs are heavy and awkward to carry through a home. The crew will do it efficiently if the path is clear. If it isn’t, the whole job slows down.
The day before installation, take care of these:
- Clear the countertops completely: appliances, utensils, anything sitting out
- Open up the path from the front door to the kitchen: move rugs, push furniture out of the way
- Empty the cabinets under the work area (installation causes vibration, and breakables should not be in there)
- Cover nearby hardwood flooring if dust or scratches are a concern
- Know where the water shutoff is if the sink is part of the installation
If pets are in the picture, make arrangements. The door will be open frequently, the noise level is significant, and it’s a rough day for animals, even when everything goes smoothly.
Installation Day: Be Available
The single most useful thing a homeowner can do on installation day is be reachable. Questions come up on-site: a measurement to confirm, a small placement decision, a plumbing detail that wasn’t covered. If the person who can answer those questions isn’t available, the crew waits.
Beyond that, the practical list is short:
- Keep the kitchen well-lit
- Know where the water shutoff is
- Confirm in advance whether plumbing reconnection is part of the installation scope, or whether your plumber needs to be on call

The Old Countertop: A Few Things to Know
In most replacement jobs, the old countertop comes out before the new one goes in. This is typically part of the installation scope. If it hasn’t come up explicitly, confirm it.
Older tile or laminate countertops can leave behind adhesive residue or an uneven substrate. The crew handles what’s needed, but if your kitchen is older or has anything unusual going on structurally, mention it at the template visit. Surprises on installation day cost time.
If any section of the existing countertop is staying, mark it clearly before the crew arrives. What seems obvious to you may not be obvious to someone walking in cold.
After Installation: Give It a Day
The joins at the wall and cabinet are typically adhesive-set or caulked, and they need time to cure before the surface gets put to work.
For the first 24 hours after installation:
- No heavy objects on the surface
- No sitting or leaning on the countertop
- Hold off on plumbing reconnection until the caulk has had time to set
Once the adhesive cures, the countertop is ready to use. If anything looks off, whether a gap at the backsplash, an uneven join, or a finish issue, flag it before the crew leaves if you can.
